Interactive Media & Animation

work by Lauren Sloan

I specialize in animation and interactive technology for performance.

My entry into artistic practice was painting and performing. Now I have discovered a world in which I can make still images move in a performance. I am an artist who has always been interested in how movement and interaction can bring people into a story.

What does healing mean for you?

The Palette Knife Project

Tisch Creative Fund Research Grant

Awarded funding to create an animated documentary on the process of healing from after sexual assault. I explored how animation could to tell sensitive stories for those who want to remain anonymous.

PS3 Residency - Bringing to life 5th Grader’s Imagination

As the artist in resident at PS3 Elementary, I facilitated the production of a play written entirely by a class of 5th graders. I guided the students through the collaborative writing process, performing their words, and constructing a digital moving set. This residency has run for three years with visiting artists, and the goal is to help students see how they have agency through their creativity, imagination, and  collaboration. One of my contributions to forwarding the program, was designing sets through projections, so students could create the world that they were envisioning. All art work was created by students, which I then animated and timed to their performance. Aside from sparse props on stage, all the set design was created through projected animations with the use of TouchDesigner. I petitioned the PTA to invest in new projectors and sound equipment so any class could use interactive digital sets in any of their performances.

Divine Intervention

An interactive play that determined the fate of Life and Death’s Marriage.

Each participant would be given one of these five characters. Three actors who played Life, Death and the Mediator, would guide the participants through the story. Each Participant would vote for either Life or Death to maintain custody over their adult children. This scale would visualize the data of the weight and project it on the screen to show who was “winning”. Through out the hour, the group would explored if anyone could be considered right in a relationship and if love was ever “meant to be”.
